Leaving letter 2015

On the 23rd December 2015 Roy and Lynne Hampson retired and have passed the practice over to Mark Underwood. Please read the letter written by Roy and Lynne before they left. Roy and Lynne will remain friends to the practice and might even cover the occasional holiday!

Spectacular Eclipse of the Sun

solar eclipse

Friday morning will see the most spectacular eclipse of the sun for 15 years. This event will not happen again until 2034.

In a rare astronomical alignment the moon will pass directly between the sun and the earth, blocking out most of the light.  Viewers in the UK will witness a partial eclipse of at least 80% depending upon location.  The solar eclipse in London begins at 8.25am Greenwich Mean Time, is at its greatest at 9.31 and ends at 10.41.  The maximum obscuration of the solar disk in London is 84%

Here are a few tips to ensure that you can view the eclipse safely without damaging your eyes:

Never look directly at the sun or use any instruments like binoculars, telescopes or cameras to view the sun directly.  Doing so may permanently damage your eyesight.

The only safe way to view the eclipse is indirectly, through a device such as a pinhole projector.  This cheap and easy method projects the sun’s image onto a screen, such as a sheet of white paper or cardboard.

Never point an unprotected camera lens at the sun as this may cause permanent damage to the camera and to your eyes.  To take photographs without damaging your camera you will need to use a solar filter recommended by your camera manufacturer.

The only safe way to view the sun is indirectly and perhaps the best way to get a good view is to watch it on television.

Our Christmas 2013 Opening Times

Hello everybody! We hope you’re enjoying the festive season. Treat yourself to a mince pie and a glass of sherry! Here are our Christmas opening times:

Hampson Opticians Christmas 2013 Opening Times

Merry Christmas from Roy & Lynne!

Hampson Opticians Achieves NHS Status

Hampson Opticians Achieves NHS Status

The National Health Service has registered Hampson Opticians as a NHS eye examination centre. This means that we can now book appointments for a full and free eye examination with a registered optometrist.

There are many ways to qualify for an NHS eye examination such as being under 19 and in full time education, or being over 60 years of age. Other ways include being diabetic, having glaucoma yourself or being closely related to someone with this condition. Certain income related benefits, such as income support or job seekers allowance, also entitle you to an NHS sight test and a voucher towards glasses.

We stock a range for adults and for children that would totally covered by the voucher so you could get glasses without cost. Or you can put the voucher towards a pair if you wish.

Hampson Opticians can also accept vouchers given by other opticians or the Hospital Eye Service.

To achieve NHS status, Hampson Opticians had to undergo a rigorous inspection of the new practice in Chandlers Ford not only for the equipment used but also for health and safety regulations.

Simply call 023 8115 9719 and we’ll book you in!

How To Change Opticians

How to change opticians

Changing opticians is easy and we can help you move our way.

Obtain a copy of your spectacle prescription

You are legally entitled to a copy of your spectacle prescription and this should be given to you at the end of your eye examination. You can take this information to any optician to get your updated glasses. Carefully keep your copy as you may be charged for another copy should you misplace it.

Patient records

Your patient records belong to the optician’s practice. Patients are entitled to see their records, have them explained or have a copy, but there may be charges for these services. Regulations regarding charges can be found here.

Your records may not be required by your new optometrist who will always ask about your medical history, in particular details regarding your eyes and your vision.  If you bring your current glasses the optometrist will be able to measure them and note the powers of your lenses.

Contact lenses

It is just as easy regarding contact lenses:  you are legally entitled to a copy of your specifications when the fit of your lenses has been completed. Take that to your new optician but if you have misplaced them try and bring the boxes of your current contact lenses to your initial appointment with your new optician, this will give your professional a starting point.

Your contact lens specifications mean that you can buy your lenses where you wish. Among other required data, they will have an expiry date and lenses can only be purchased for likely use up until that date.

These specifications are not necessarily tied to your last aftercare appointment.  You may, for example, have specifications that last for a year but prefer to see your optician every few months.

We warmly welcome everyone to our new practice in Chandlers Ford. Find out more about our location and booking an appointment.

Roy Helps Contact Lens Client Win Billiards Cup!

Recently we caught up with one of our contact lens clients Paul Adams who is a member of the Hampshire Billiard team. He told us the fantastic news that his team recently won the English County Billiards Cup for the first time since 1980! Paul also spoke about how we have helped him to improve his game:

I put my improvement over the past couple of years down to Roy’s help and me changing to a 1 Day Acuvue Moist Toric lens in my left eye! The difference in sharpness and balance between my normal 1 Day Acuvue Moist lens in my right eye has been a revelation and has given me extra confidence.

We’re very pleased that we have helped Paul and hope that we can continue helping him in the future. If you would like to read the full story on how the Hampshire team won the cup, continue reading below.

Hampshire billiards trio win English County Billiards Cup for the first time since 1980

We’ve been waiting 32 years but a Hampshire Billiards team comprising of John Mullane, captain Terry Azor and Paul Adams has won the English County Billiards Cup. They travelled to the Atack Snooker Centre, Nuneaton and played superbly to shock the glittering stars of the eight counties involved. 1980 was the last time a Hampshire side won the coveted prize.

The quarter final saw Mullane beat Yorkshire’s Rob Patterson, Adams keep up with ex-professional snooker player Jonathan Bagley, until Bagley eventually pulled away to win and Azor play the game of his day against experienced Steve Crossland, to win the tie 2-1 on the straight one hour timed knockout format.

The semi-final inspired all three against Cambridgeshire, winning 3-0, with Mullane making a wonderful 114 break. The last time they reached the final in 2006 they narrowly lost to three Cleveland England internationals, and Hampshire captain Terry Azor quipped, “this time I want to go one better”.

Paul Adams said “we knew we had a good chance of making the final again as we were all cueing well. The depth in quality billiard players throughout the other sides was awesome. We were so focused in the final we barely looked at each other to see how each was progressing. We were so determined, we just had to win it!”

In the final Mullane beat Dave Walker, Azor was beaten by Devon’s billiard legend Bill Andress and Adams overcame David Coombes for a memorable 2-1 victory all three will never forget.
